The Slovene National Benefit Society celebrates 100 years of service to Slovene America.
Organized in 1904 as Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota (SNPJ), the Society provided
life insurance and social activities for Slovenian immigrant families. Lodges were
founded in many states. SNPJ activities have centered around Cleveland-style polka
music. Each year, SNPJ sponsors a Slovenefest, the country's largest outdoor Slovene-themed
music festival. Polka music is heard weekly at the SNPJ Recreation Center in Borough
of SNPJ, Pennsylvania, and SNPJ halls from Florida to California. In 1939, a young
Frankie Yankovic played at SNPJ Farm in Kirtland, Ohio. SNPJ is the largest Slovene
organizaton in the United States, with 42,000 members.
