Joe Godina is a Penn-Ohio polka legend on the air and in the studio. For nearly 60
years, fans of the Cleveland-Style sound have been tuning into Joe’s “Polka Spotlight”
radio shows. His Spotlight International label releases albums by polka music’s finest
artists. Joe was raised on polka music in his Slovenian family in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
Local broadcasters Sam Pugliano (poo-glee-AH-no) and George Mlay (m’LAYE) inspired
Joe to start his own show in 1966. Joe’s “Polka Spotlight” featured recordings by
Penn-Ohio performers. Many of them turned to Joe to produce their albums. Johnny
Krizancic and Al Markic joined with Joe to launch the Spotlight Recording company
in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Over the years, Joe has released more than 60 recordings,
featuring top polka talents, including many Hall of Famers. He remastered many of
Eddie Habat’s vintage cuts for a compilation. Spotlight produced the first Polka
Mass recordings for Father George Balasko. WPIC in Sharon, Pennsylvania, has been
Joe’s home station since the beginning. Hie expanded his show to stations in other
states. You can also hear him on Twenty-Four-Seven Polka Heaven dot com. Joe has
held leadership positions with the Penn-Ohio Polka Pals and performed on the button
box with the Summit Jammers.
